Do you struggle with how to plant up a large pot? I have some easy tips on how to choose the right plants for your planters.
Start With a Variety of Plants
The most important thing is choosing a variety of plants. You will want to choose something that is tall, something that will add texture, a plant that will drape over the side, and different sizes of blooms.
Add Height and Texture
For texture, choose things like ferns and grasses that are eye-catching and add greenery to your large planters.
Choose Plants That Spill Over the Sides
Groundcovers like ivy, periwinkle, sedum, creeping thyme, and sweet woodruff are great for spilling over the side. Most are perennial too so depending on your climate and how you store the pots in the winter, they will last multiple years.
Mix Different Sizes of Blooms
I like to choose at least one larger flower and one smaller flower. Having different sized blooms adds visual interest.
Some of the plants you choose can even do double duty. Tall grasses not only give you height, but they are also a fun texture. If you plant a tall flower like cosmos or dahlias, they are not only lofty, but they are your large bloom and your showstopper. A plant with small blooms can also grow down over the sides to be your spiller.
Arrange Your Plants Before Planting
Once you have picked out the plants you will be using it is time to figure out the placement. Before I take them out of their plastic containers, I like to simply place them in the pot until I like how it looks.
Plant for a Full Look
Now it’s time to grab your gardening gloves and get planting! Don’t be afraid to add a lot of plants to your pot. I like them to fit in there nice and snug. As long as they have potting soil around them and a little room to grow, you are just fine. I want my planter to look nice and full from the get go instead of having to wait months for it to fill out.
