February in the Garden with Digz Ambassadors

Dig in with these Essentials

As winter settles in and our gardens rest, many plant lovers turn their attention indoors. February is the perfect time to refresh your houseplant routines, tidy up your tools, and give your greenery the care it needs to stay healthy until spring. This month, Digz Ambassadors Stacy Risenmay (@stacyrisenmay) and Xin Lu (@athomewithxin) share practical, easy‑to‑follow tips to help you prune, propagate, and protect your plants through the coldest months of the year.

Stacy Risenmay’s Guide to Pruning & Propagation

Houseplants can be easy to overlook during winter, but Stacy reminds us that a little seasonal maintenance goes a long way. As she explains, “Pruning your houseplants helps the overall health of the plant… when you prune, it signals the plant to put on new healthy growth.”

Using clean, sharp snips (her go‑to pair is from Digz), Stacy demonstrates how trimming back leggy vines encourages fuller, bushier plants. Her pothos—bald on top after two years without a trim—became the perfect example of how pruning can revive tired growth.

But she doesn’t stop there. Stacy also walks through simple propagation methods to turn cuttings into brand‑new plants. As she notes, “You can simply add the plant cutting to some water and wait until roots start to form… this is my preferred way to propagate because it is easy and has consistent results.”

For gardeners who prefer soil propagation, she recommends creating greenhouse‑like humidity using terrariums or small clear totes—an easy way to help cuttings root successfully.

With a mix of pruning and propagation, Stacy shows how to rejuvenate older plants and multiply your collection at the same time.

Xin Lu’s Winter Houseplant Care Do’s & Don’ts

Winter can be tough on indoor plants, but Xin’s practical care guide makes it easy to support your greenery through the darker months. She breaks it down into simple do’s and don’ts that help prevent common cold‑season issues.

Winter Houseplant DO’s

-Rotate your plants regularly Weaker winter sunlight can cause plants to lean. Rotating them each week—Xin pairs this with her watering routine—keeps growth even and stems strong. “Rotate your plants regularly to ensure all sides receive light.”

-Increase humidity when possible Indoor heating dries out the air, so boosting humidity helps plants stay hydrated. A humidifier works well, but grouping plants or using a pebble tray also gently raises moisture levels. “Indoor heating dries out the air, which many houseplants dislike.”

-Clean the leaves Dust builds up faster than you think and blocks light. A quick wipe with a damp cloth helps plants photosynthesize efficiently and look healthier. “Dust builds up faster than you might think and can block light.”

-Check for pests and problems Winter stress can make plants more vulnerable to spider mites and mealybugs. Inspect leaves and stems regularly, and trim away damaged spots with clean snips—Xin uses her Digz compact gardening snips for this. “Winter stress can make plants more vulnerable to pests like spider mites and mealybugs.”

Winter Houseplant DON’Ts

-Don’t fertilize during winter Most houseplants rest this time of year and don’t need extra nutrients. Fertilizing now can cause weak, leggy growth or salt buildup in the soil. “Most houseplants enter a resting phase in winter and don’t need extra nutrients.”

-Don’t repot unless absolutely necessary Repotting is stressful for plants, and winter isn’t the best time for recovery. Wait until spring unless the plant is severely root‑bound or struggling. “Repotting can be stressful, and winter isn’t the best time for plants to recover.”

-Don’t propagate right now Cuttings root slowly in winter and are more likely to fail. Save propagation for warmer months when plants are actively growing. “Propagation is best done when plants are actively growing.”
