Dig in with these Essentials

As the holiday season wraps up and the new year begins, many gardeners feel the urge to reset, clean, and organize their homes—and their gardens! If you’re looking for inspiration to kickstart your gardening year, you’ll love these practical tips from gardening experts Stacey Risenmay (@staceyrisenmay) and Xin Lu (@athomewithxin). Whether you’re struggling with garden tool clutter or slow compost, these ideas will help you grow a more organized and sustainable garden in 2026.

Stacey Risenmay’s Clever Garden Tool Organization

Stacey Risenmay knows the struggle of keeping gardening gear organized, especially when space is tight. Without a dedicated gardening shed, Stacey used her one-car garage for storage, but it quickly filled up with bikes, lawn mowers, and totes—making it easy for smaller gardening tools to get lost.

Her solution? Repurpose her office closet for gardening supplies. With all three closet walls already in use, Stacey got creative and turned the closet door into a fourth “wall” by adding a hanging organizer with five shelves. To keep everything in its place, she labeled each shelf with vinyl lettering (you could also stencil or use tags for a personal touch). Now, her hand tools, seeds, and gloves are easy to find, clean, and protected from the elements.

Pro Tip: Use vertical space—like doors or the inside of cabinets—to maximize storage in small areas. Labeling shelves or bins helps keep everything organized and easy to access, especially for frequently used items like snips and pruners.

Xin Lu’s Composting Do’s & Don’ts

If your compost pile seems to be taking forever to break down, Xin Lu (@athomewithxin) has four essential composting do’s and don’ts to speed up the process and keep your compost healthy:

DO #1: Chop Your Kitchen Scraps. Smaller pieces break down faster.

DON’T: Add meat, dairy, or cooked foods. These attract pests and slow decomposition.

DO #2: Turn Your Compost Regularly. Oxygen is key for breaking down organic matter.

DON’T: Forget about your compost! Regular turning keeps it active.

DO #3: Keep Compost Moist (like a wrung-out sponge). Moisture helps microbes do their job.

DON’T: Let it get too dry or soggy. Too much or too little moisture can cause odors or slow decomposition.

DO #4: Balance Greens and Browns. Greens (kitchen scraps) provide nitrogen, while browns (dry leaves, cardboard) provide carbon. Aim for a 50/50 mix by volume.

DON’T: Compost only kitchen scraps. Always add browns for a healthy, balanced pile.
