Summer is in full swing here in Georgia with temps up to the 90s everyday now. Here are some ways I keep myself cool while gardening.
-
Shift to the "Early Bird" Schedule
The easiest way to avoid overheating is to simply avoid the hottest parts of the day. Midday and afternoon sun can be brutal, so try shifting your gardening routine to the early morning hours. I try to get all my watering and harvesting done before 10am. I also have the garden beds on a drip irrigation system so water is directed to the roots of the plants.

Use a Cooling Necktie
I like using a necktie with polymer crystals inside. Soak it in water first then tie it around your neck. The beads last longer than any cooling towel I’ve used and it keeps your hands free for gardening.
-
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Pretend you’re a plant and drink lots of water! It sounds obvious, but it is the most critical rule of summer safety: you must stay hydrated. Once you actually feel thirsty, your body is already running low on fluids.

Throw on the Perfect Sun Hat
This is my must-have garden wear. @digzgloves makes the perfect one that comes with a tie and doesn’t flop and cover my eyes. I wear this almost every day.
Summer gardening is incredibly rewarding, but your health always comes first. Listen to your body, take frequent breaks in the shade.
